Local junior surf stars Klee Strachan (Sun Valley) and Tarryn Chudleigh (Scarborough) were SA's top performers in their respective divisions at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Huntington Beach, California, where the South African team finished a credible fifth out of 28 nations last weekend.
Strachan, who won the SA u/16 boys title at the Strand the day before, departing for his second world champs, was one of the standouts in the u/16 division of the international tournament. The Fish Hoek schoolboy went unbeaten through the first six rounds to reach the last four of qualifying stream in the double elimination format.
Breaking his favourite surfboard early on the final day left Strachan having to borrow unfamiliar equipment. In choppy head-high waves he could only manage fourth place in the qualifier final, slipping to the repecharge final, where he had a second chance to reach the grand final.
However, bad luck struck again when he lost one of his surfboard?s fins during the heat and was again relegated to fourth spot, leaving him disconsolate but in a meritorious sixth place overall in the u/16 division. Strachan also participated in the Tag Team event, where the five-person SA team clinched a silver medal for the first time.
Chudleigh reached the third round of the qualifiers before being relegated to the repecharge rounds. There the 15-year-old, in her first world junior championships and with three more years of qualifying for the u/18 age division, successfully advanced through two more rounds before being ousted in 13th position overall in the event.
On the home front, the junior divisions of the Quiksilver Western Province Surfing Championships were staged in one metre (2-3 foot) waves at Long Beach in Kommetjie on the weekend. Although the results have been embargoed until the senior divisions have been completed and the awards function is held on 20 November, local surfers filled the finals in most divisions. The seniors (from u/20 to over 55) will be staged on the weekends of November 12 and 13 and 19 and 20 and are open to anyone who joins WP Surfing as a member.

The second day of the second of three Kahuna Surf Series events for the up and coming young guns of WP surfing had to be postponed due to thick mist at Bloubergstrand last weekend, but not before a host of Deep South surfers made winning starts in their first round encounters.
They included the likes of Adam Zartz and Sam Moore from Muizenberg, Jarred and Sasha-Lee Veldhuis (Sun Valley), Bianca Huber, James Lowe, Alex Krause and Matthew Wormser (all Kommetjie), Ollie Morris and the Notten brothers - Nick and Dominic - from St James, Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) and Hannah Bing (Noordhoek).
Details of the postponed final day and the awards ceremony will be made available as soon as a suitable venue and dates can be found in the crowded contest calendar, school exams and the fact that Big Bay, Bloubergstrand has now been closed for re-development.
