The last surfing contest of the year in the Western Province takes place in Kommetjie this weekend, when the third and final event in the Kahuna Surf Series sees the up-and-coming young surf stars on the Cape Peninsula compete for thousands of rands of surf industry products and services.

Nearly 100 competitors in u/10, u/12, u/14 and u/16 divisions for boys and girls between five and 16 years of age have entered the two-day event.

Every surfer competes twice before the top four in each division contest finals for valuable prizes.

The results of the three events at Muizenberg, Bloubergstrand and Melk-bos and the final event in Kommetjie are then accumulated and the series winners will be crowned at an awards ceremony at Grommets Surf Culture Café in Kommetjie on Sunday afternoon.

The top three in each division receive gold, silver and bronze medals, with the series champions receiving three-day intensive coaching courses from the Kahuna Surfing Academy and custom-made Reef wetsuits. Other prizes include Von Zipper sunglasses, Kustom footwear, Earthsea surfboards and products from Mrs Palmers, Puma, Zigzag surfing mag and Survival accessories.

Along with the chance to see the future stars of WP surfing in action, there will also be plenty of great prizes and activities for youngsters and teenagers at the contest on Saturday and Sunday.

Call the WP Surfing Info Line on 082 233 4001 after 07:30 on each day of the event for further details.

Josh Salie was crowned the 2005 WP Open surfing champion at the awards function last week when he beat Brett Shearer, Dave Richards and 14-year-old Matthew Bromley in an all-Kommetjie final.

Sun Valley?s Brandon Roberts took the u/20 boys? title, with Richards the runner-up, while Shearer took the u/18 boys division. Aran Moore (Muizenberg) is the u/16 champ; Bromley annexed the u/14 title; Michael February (Kommetjie) beat Jarred Veldhuis (Sun Valley) to the u/12 crown and Max Armstrong (Kommetjie) took the u/10?s from Nick Notten (St James).

Mark Hoffman was voted in as WP President for 2006 and he and his family move from Kirstenhof to Kommetjie early in the new year, which will see daughter Tanika spending even more time in the surf. The 14-year-old clinched the SA u/14 girls' crown in October and then added the WP u/14 title when she relegated Kommetjie-based training partner Bianca Huber to the runner-up berth. Holly Armstrong (Kommetjie) was third and Anna Notten (St James) fourth.

The WP Surfer of the Year award went to 16-year-old Klee Strachan, who finished sixth at the ISA world junior championships in California in October, while outgoing WP president Isaac February was a worthy recipient of the Basil Lomberg Memorial trophy, awarded in honour of the late former SA and ISA President, one of world surfing's all-time greatest administrators.

And, while the powers that be continue to do nothing but "research" and spend our rates and taxes on "spotting" and "tagging" sharks, despite evidence that their conservation efforts have created an over-population, be careful out there!
