Kommetjie-BASED big wave charger Andrew Marr found himself on the front page of the Honolulu Advertiser last week when he was photographed riding a three-metre wave at Sunset Beach on the North Shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

The photo formed part of a portfolio of the beaches and surf on the North Shore taken on Martin Luther King Day, a Federal public holiday in the USA, and was subsequently chosen for the front page.

Other locals in the news include Sun Valley's Brandon Roberts, who finished a credible 13th out of 198 of the world?s top 20-year-old and younger surfers in the Balin Pro Junior event in Victoria on the southern coast of Australia on the weekend.

Former Kommetjie surfer James Woods (15) surprised everyone, including himself, by reaching the semi-finals of an open division club event in his new home town of Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. He was awarded the "bravest grom" prize after being eliminated by the likes of Joel Parkinson, Josh Kerr and former Durbanite Shaun Gossmann.

Talking of groms, the seven champions from the three-event Kahuna Surfing Series at the end of 2005 spent an informative three days on a high performance surf camp in Kommetjie. Coordinated and run by the country's highest internationally qualified surf coach, Dene Botha, the course took the rising surf stars to the Earthsea factory in Heron Park to see how surfboards are made and incorporated lectures on surf photography by globally published photographer Alan van Gysen, international team surfing by national junior team coach Howard Gold, and how to attract sponsorship by 1983 Springbok surfing coach Paul Botha [author of this article].

Sean Koch (Imhoff's Gift), Ashleigh Hart and Daniel Wilson from Tokai, St James siblings Alex and Ollie Morris, Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) and James Lowe (Kommetjie) also had their fitness tested and received instruction on the correct stretches, physical exercises and nutrition required to become top performing surfers, while they were kept well fed at the Grommets Surf Culture Café in Kommetjie.
