THE 17th annual Karate/Taekwondo Championships organised by Ashihara Karate has drawn a formidable list of entries from India, Seychelles and Swaziland to the College of Cape Town (formerly Hewat) Hall in Crawford on Saturday, 19 August.
The foreign members will fight it out with 200 competitors from throughout South Africa, which include the top karatekas from the local clubs like Kyokushin, Ashihara and Confederation.
Hoosain Narker, a championship official, said that the foreign teams include several experienced fighters and that he anticipated the locals would be hard-pressed to retain their titles.
Hissham Allie (Rylands), Ebrahim Abrahams (Seido Karate, Bonteheuwel), Jean-Pierre Ellis (UWC), Hashim Mullins, Gukiem Hayzer (both Ashihari Retreat) and Nasiera Abrahams (Ashihara Grassy Park) are among the title-holders.
Nasiera Abrahams showed her metal when she won two golds at the 2005 World Ashihara Championships in Germany.
There will be medals at stake in more than 50 divisions, which include sparring and various forms of kata.
The special event of the day will be the Sabaki Challenge, a no pads, no gloves, full-contact division for the tough and hardy fighters.
Preliminaries will start at 09:00 with the finals scheduled to take place from 13:00.
Admission is R15 for adults and R10 for children.
All clubs or individuals wanting to enter can phone Kaicho Hoosain Narker on 701-1701 or 082 369 6904 or visit www.sabakichallenge.org.
