    Fierce finals favour WPCC

LOCAL clubs dominated the Premier Tennis League this season and victory in the women's division sees WPCC on the brink of claiming both titles.

Despite patches of heavy rain over the past week, the women's final managed to come to a conclusion between Camps Bay and Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) at Camps Bay Tennis Club.

The home side has dominated the women's Premier League for the last six years, having been unbeaten for an incredible seven seasons (55 matches), including this season where they topped the log after they finished off Evertsdal to secure the home final. WPCC snapped at their heels, but lost some crucial points with one of their strong players missing a match.

They finished second on the log and had to dispatch Spear Tennis Academy for their place in the final.

WPCC were at full strength on the day and came out firing against Camps Bay. Michelle Gough (WPCC) battled with Tamsin Staples (Camps Bay) in a tight final. Gough edged ahead to win 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. WPCC?s Adri Lochner defeated Camps Bay's Rene Mentz 6-3, 6-4 and team captain, Bridget Visee smashed through Suzie van der Merwe 6-0, 6-1.

Sally Estcourt's victory over Lizanne Davidson secured the premier league title for WPCC for the first time in six years over the defending champions Camps Bay.

"We were pretty consistent over the season which is the best way to do well. We also have a good mixture of older and younger players and we are all friends who get on well, which is good because you don't feel like you are out there on your own." said Visee.

The men's final between WPCC and defending champions Bergvliet was highly affected by the weather. The Friday night schedule was completely rained out and wet courts at Bergvliet on Saturday allowed only a small amount of playing time.

Bergvliet dominated the league through the season, ending a comfortable first place on the log. But WPCC took advantage of the knock-out situation and forced Bergvliet onto the back foot.

Things are all tied up at 2-2 overall in the singles, with WPCC ahead 6-4 on sets. This means that one doubles victory for WPCC will secure the men's title for the club. A match date had not been set by the time we went to print, but Western Province Tennis is hoping to have the league concluded by the end of the week.
