    Season set to explode
    Jason Acar

GRINDING performances from the slick southern suburbs Super League A rugby teams has them in a prime position at the end of the season's first round.

Maties are on top with 45 points, with no losses for the season as yet.

Hamiltons sit comfortably in second place on the log with 39 points.

The rejuvenated Hamiltons have dominated most of their opponents throughout the first part of the season. A close loss to last year's league winners, the Maties, in Stellenbosch has been their only defeat of the season. The Maties will have to travel away to Green Point during the second part of the season where they will be greeted by a hungry Hamilton.

"We are reaching an exciting part of the season. We have only had one loss this season and it was to Maties by six points, so we still got a bonus point from the game," says Johann Lerm, first team coach at Hamiltons.

"The standard of rugby this season is really high, even higher then the Vodacom Cup I think. Maties gelled really early this season which maybe gave them an advantage and SK Walmers are playing fantastic rugby at the moment, so all three of us are up there. We are playing and training to top the log, but it will be difficult. You have to play your best team every weekend because one mistake can be trouble."

SK Walmers are in third place with 35 points. They have only suffered losses to the Maties and Hamiltons, but have been a strong force in the first round otherwise.

Villager follow them in fourth place with 26 points. They have fought to five wins and four losses during the first round, but have shown the potential to be a dangerous side this season.

Varsity cup finalists UCT are currently lying fifth with 22 points, having enjoyed four victories and suffered four defeats. They still have a game against Helderberg this weekend before the break for the first round. A victory could leap them ahead of Villager as they go into the break.

The start of the second round of the season begins early next month and the top team will be fighting for crucial points in their bid for the league title.

Hamiltons will take on second last placed NNK Rugby Club in their first game of the second round on 12 July.

SK Walmers face off against Helderberg, who have only mustered one victory all season, on 4 July.

Villager will attack NNK after Hamiltons on 19 July. UCT's first game in the second round will be against the rampant SK Walmers on 25 July.
