JUDGE DEON VAN ZYL, a member and past president of the Gordon's Bay Rotary Club, was recently elected as Assistant Governor for nine Rotary Clubs in the district. He is also a nominee for the position of District Governor in 2009/10 and 2010/11.
Deon, a judge of the Cape Provincial Division of the High Court, has been a member of the Rotary Club of Gordon's Bay since its charter in July 1998 and was president of the club in 2000/2001.
He is dedicated to the community he serves, and has received various awards for the sterling work he has done in the Helderberg, such as the Rotary International Four Avenues of Service Citation for Individual Rotarians and the Paul Harris Award for services rendered to the community.
He was born in Springs and matriculated at the Springs Boys' High School. At the University of Pretoria he was awarded a LLB degree and MA in Latin, and thereafter received four doctorates, namely the Dr Jur, PhD and LLD, and D Litt (Latin). He also studied at the Universities of Paris and Hamburg for a year.
After completing his studies, he became a professor in and head of the Department of Roman Law and Legal History at the University of the Free State. He also acted as part-time head of the Department of Roman Law and Legal History at the University of Pretoria.
He is presently an honorary professor of law at the North West University and an extraordinary professor of law at the University of Free State. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh for a number of years.
Earlier in his career, he practised as an advocate at the Free State and Pretoria Bar. In 1983 he became Senior Counsel and from 1985 to 1993 he was Judge of the Transvaal Provincial Division of the High Court of South Africa. Since 1994 he has been a judge of the Cape Provincial Division of the High Court.
Deon is the author of nine books, including textbooks on Roman Law, Legal History and Comparative Law, and of more than 100 contributions to legal and other journals. He is also the co-editor, with Justice Ajibola of Nigeria, of a book on The Judiciary in Africa. More than 140 of his judgements have been reported in South African law reports.
Deon also has wide-ranging national interests. He is president for Africa of the World Jurist Association based in Washington DC, which is dedicated to seeking world peace through law, and an Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law in Paris, the Society of Legal Scholars in London and the Stair Society in Edinburgh. He is also a networker of the Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management in London.
In 1992 he received the Laureatus Award of the University of Pretoria Alumni Society in recognition of his exceptional achievements, and in 1997 the World Jurist Award was conferred on him in recognition of his contributions to world peace under the rule of law.
His academic achievements aside, Deon is also an enthusiastic supporter of all manner of sports, particularly athletics and was the last president of the South African Amateur Athletics Union and first president of Athletics South Africa. In February 1999 he was appointed a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport and served on its ad hoc arbitration panels, doing duty at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2006 Commonwealth in Melbourne. He also chairs the Legal and Arbitration Commission of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC)
Deon is married to Elsa and they have two daughters - Esther and Christine-Marié.
