    Diners shocked by 'racial attack'
    18/04/08

WHAT appeared to have been a racially motivated incident at Waterstone Village on Saturday, April 6, shortly after 19:00, has shocked patrons at the Spur restaurant who witnessed the violent incident. "It was absolutely horrendous" says one of the patrons, George. He and his wife and their nine-year-old son were having supper at the Spur, when they witnessed two cars, a white Mazda and silver Golf, both with CFM registration numbers, driving into the centre "like lunatics".

"The cars almost hit a woman who was walking out of the centre, and when someone went to the cars and told the occupants they could not drive like that, five or six big men, aggressively attacked the man like a pack of dogs.

They were beating him to a pulp. We though they had killed him, as he was just lying there. "But when he stirred and got up, they attacked him again," he said.

George said everyone ran out to see what was going on, but no one approached the men or tried to intervene.

"They were swearing and carrying on like lunatics and looked as if they were out to cause trouble and were challenging everybody with a "wat gaan die boere nou maak?"

An upset George said the security at the Waterstone Village was non-existent.

"When we approached the guards, they said they were only car attendants. They just stood there laughing as if it was a big joke."

He said someone phoned the police, but they only arrived about an hour later.

"By that time the victim of the assault had already gone to the police station to report the incident. George says he gave him the registration numbers of the two cars which he had taken down and also told him he was willing to testify as a witness.

"What happened was absolutely scary from a security point of view. As a family we would be scared to go there again for a quiet evening out." Karen Muller, Centre Manager said on Tuesday they were aware of the incident and were sorry that something of this nature happened on their premises.

"The people in the parking lot are only car watchers and not security guards. We do have security personnel on duty inside the centre. They would've taken action if anything happened inside the centre. As this incident was of a personal nature and happened outside the centre, it was clearly a case for the police, and they did phone them."

Ms Muller says they had also been in touch with the security firm as how they should act, should an incident like this ever occur again.
