Beach attack suspect back on the streets
    20/06/08

THE suspect who allegedly attacked Somerset West teacher Jeanine Knight with a broken bottle on the Strand Beach in broad daylight, was arrested on Tuesday, two weeks after the brutal incident.

Leon Pieterse (18) of Elgin Orchards in Grabouw, appeared briefly in the Strand Magistrate's court on Wednesday. The accused was not asked to plead to a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

    Asked for legal aid
Magistrate S Lea remanded the case until July 16 for further investigation and the appointment of an attorney.

Pieterse has asked for legal aid representation.

Despite the charge being of a very serious nature, Pieterse is however not in police custody, as the police released him after his arrest on Tuesday, with just a warning to appear in court on Wednesday.
