THE Western Cape Watercolour Group will meet on Saturday, March 18 at 14:00 in the Somerset West Library Hall. The guest artist will be Estelle Byrne, an experienced artist who lives in Simonstown.
She was born in Rhodesia. After school she studied at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Her Post Grad year was spent in London, just after the Second World War, where she enjoyed the rich cultural events on offer.
Estelle later moved to Botswana where she started a weaving factory, employing 30 local women. She then moved to South Africa and became involved with the local fynbos, painting simple studies of around 400 plants. She has held solo exhibitions in Simonstown, Tulbagh, Franschhoek, Muizenberg and Kirstenbosch.
Estelle also taught art at senior level for nearly 30 years. Her talents included theatre sets, murals in collage, batiks and finally weld-art sculptures. She exhibited at the National Gallery no less than three times. In 1978 she won the weld-art competition.
Estelle will look at watercolour paintings brought by members of the WCWG, offering advice and constructive criticism. She has a good understanding of artists on all levels and it is not often that the group has someone of her talent and experience to help and advise. Members are asked to bring along one or two paintings. Non-members are welcome, but cannot take advantage of her offer. R5 for members and R10 for non-members includes tea.
