The Helderberg Municipality staff entrusted with watering the sports fields around the Helderberg, must according to the Helderberg Cricket Club take responsibility for flooding Helderzicht's A field on Friday night.
According to club members, the Helderberg municipal staff forgot to switch off the sprinklers on the A pitch at the Helderzicht sports grounds the Friday night before their match against Milnerton was to resume.
When the second innings of the Helderberg vs Milnerton resumed on Saturday morning, Helderberg were 37 runs behind.
What greeted the cricketers at the field on Saturday morning was a water-logged pitch and the home team had to wield brooms rather than cricket bats for most of the morning, sweeping the water off the pitch and putting saw dust on it and waiting until 13:15 to resume play on a very, very dangerous wicket.
When play resumed, Milnerton's fast bowlers let rip and Fahiem Adonis and Grant Moss had a tough time with the fast rising ball.
With 25/1 and needing a further 12 runs to wipe out the deficit, Helderberg were in trouble with 32/5 and eventually all out 47, leaving Milnerton 9 runs to win.
Helderberg then used the same tactics and had the visitors in trouble early on when Ibrahiem Latief had them at 4/1, but with only 9 to win, it was no contest.
Club coach, Mario Bougaard, said Helderberg made no excuses for the cricket played, but responsibility had to be taken by the municipality to avoid the same situation happening all over again.
Helderberg play Hottentots Holland on Saturday at the Gustrouw sports fields in a much anticipated derby between these rival clubs, which should not be missed.
Bishop Lavis beat Helderberg's second team by five wickets in their two-day match. Helderberg scored 204 in their second innings with J Cyster (58), L Whitting (42), R Hendricks (36) and L Trezires (23) top scoring. The best bowler for Bishop Lavis was F Roberts with 19-5-67. Bishop Lavis only had to score 86 runs to secure their win, but lost five wickets before they were able to do this. The best bowler for Helderberg was C Lottering with 12-4-15.
Helderberg's third team had a convincing win against Durbanville in their one-day match on Saturday.
Durbanville won the toss and elected to bat and were all out for 150 in 38 overs. The best bowlers were G Glen with 7,3-3-42, G Sylvester 6-3-22, G Hurling 8-2-18 and Y Farlow 8-2-27. Helderberg needed only 28 overs to pass the score. The best batsmen were A Beckett (60 not out) and G Hurling 57 not out).
