Somerset West are well placed to win their two-day match against Strandfontein at Radloff Park on Saturday and if they are able to do this, they will strengthen their top spot in the Western Province 1 C League.
Skipper, Jaco Castle, lost the toss and was asked to bat. Although they lost Jaco fairly early during the match, they consolidated and scored a decent 217/9 declared in 65.5 overs.
The best batsmen for Somerset West were Shaun Dicks with a brilliant 87 runs, and number eight Vincent Castle adding 40 not out and Stephen Southey with 19 runs.
Almost all the other batsmen chipped in with runs and there were a number of useful partnerships during the innings which helped keep the score ticking along. The ball was seaming around considerably at the start of the inning, but things became easier later on.
It was again very hot and play was halted every 45 minutes for water breaks. The slow outfield resulted in batsmen running many two's and threes instead of hitting four runs.
Somerset West then bowled Strandfontein out for only 109 runs and immediately asked them to follow on and at the end of play on day one Strandfontein were 5/1.
The chief destroyers yet again were Jaco Castle with 7 for 47 in 14.3 overs, Vincent Castle with 1 for 23 in 10 overs, Christo Southey 1 for 17 in 7 overs and Graeme Braybrooke with 1 for 11 in 3 overs.
The Castle brothers (Jaco and Vincent) opened the bowling. Jaco took two wickets and Vincent one. Jaco then came back later in the attack to bowl spinners and took five more wickets.
Second team
The second team played Victoria at home. Captain, Björn van Huyssteen, lost the toss and was asked to bat first.
Somerset scored a well played 196 all out but could have scored much more after being 151/4 at a stage.
The best batsmen were 16-year-old John Cilliers who played a pearl of a knock for his 77 runs, Tony Olivier with 36 runs, Björn van Huyssteen with 19 runs and David Kilian with 16 runs.
Somerset West then bowled Victoria out for 199 runs who at the end of play, had a three run lead.
The day was not without controversy with Björn van Huyssteen taking a one handed catch in front of first slip, but batsman Tony Olivier and was given not out by the player/umpire as according to him, the ball came off the pitch.
Nevertheless, this batsman added another 30 runs for Victoria.
Best bowlers for SWCC were Nicholas Moffit with 4/17 in 8 overs, debutante Adrian "Fidel" Williams with 2/31 in 9 overs and Jahn Cilliers with 1/8 in 3 overs.
