St. Georges plan bigger, better Easter tournament
    22/02/08

After the phenomenal success of their Top 8 Easter Tournament last year, St. Georges Rugby Club in Strand will this year again host the tournament and have vowed to make this year's event, to be held from March 19 to 24, even bigger and better than last year's.

The tournament will take the form of a knock-out competition from Wednesday, March 19 to Monday, March 24 whereby the eight teams will compete in three matches each for the R7 000 winners cheque and floating trophy.

    Runners-up will receive R5 000, third R4 000, fourth R3 500, fifth (plate winner) R3 000, and sixth to eighth R2 500, R2 300 and R2 000.

The player of the tournament will receive R1 000, and the player of each match (x12) R100, most points of the tournament R250 and most tries R250. Metropolitan Group Schemes will also be presenting bags, caps, t-shirts and water bottles for the player awards.

The following seven clubs have already responded to the invitation to play in the event and have entered into the competition along with the host club St. Georges: All Saints, Elsies River, Grabouw, Strand, Strand United, Belhar and Strand Pioneers.

The draw for the tournament will take place on Friday, February 29 at 21:00 in the Strand Town Hall and four club representatives are invited to attend the function, which will include a snack/dance with the N2 Jazz Band in attendance.

Clubs attending are requested to bring along a club banner, sponsors logo or club flags.

The normal rules of rugby football will apply as prescribed by the IRb and the tournament is sanctioned by the SA Rugby Union, Western Province Rugby and Boland Rugby Union. Clubs will be allowed to register a squad of 25 players plus five coaching staff members and players cards will be issued for the duration of the event. The winners will then go through to the Premier section and the losers to the Plate Section.

The semifinals will be played on Saturday, March 22 and the finals on Monday, March 24.
