Tartan Army sets up camp in Gordon's Bay
    22/02/08

THE Soccer World Cup 2010 is two years away, but Scotland supporters are already preparing to come to South Africa in their thousands - whether their team qualifies or not.

"We will be coming to enjoy the country and the festival of football," a group of Tartan Army supporters currently visiting Gordon's Bay, told DistrictMail recently. The Mid-central Scotland branch of the Tartan Army was named after Scottish hero William Wallace and had its first meeting in December 1999.

Many of members are die hard soccer fans who have travelled all over the world following the Scotland national football team.

Jim himself has visited 34 countries thanks to his love of the game, and says clubs often get preferential treatment when booking flights.

He says they don't just go for the football, but have loads of fun as well, enjoying the festive atmosphere at these big events.

He ads that the Tartan Army are famous for not causing trouble at games, and have on many occasions won certificates and praise for fair play and good behaviour, including the Euro 1992 UEFA Play Award, Euro 1996 Play Award runners-up, Euro 1996 City of Birmingham Scroll for outstanding conduct and friendliness and the 1998 World Cup winner of the Per Ludos Frateritas Trophy for good behaviour.

"We have 170 members, and expect between 20 and 30 of our group to travel with us to Gordon's Bay for the 2010 Football World Cup. Many of the other Tartan Army groups will follow our lead," Jim says.

They have already booked their accommodation for 2010 - a beautiful villa at the top of Boundary Road. Why Gordon's Bay? "Because it is a lovely location near the airport with plenty of facilities including pubs, restaurant and accommodation," says Jim.
