HCDC and Cricket SA help local schools
    22/02/08

The Helderberg Cricket Development Centre (HCDC), situated in Somerset Business Park, recently received a very welcome donation of two full cricket kits from Cricket South Africa to use in their local schools development programme. Craig Melvill, one of the co-owners of the centre, said they sent out letters via e-mail to a number of companies (including Cricket SA) requesting second-hand cricket equipment to use in their development programme.

"We were thrilled to receive a reply from Cricket SA that they would be happy to help out and shortly afterwards received two brand new cricket kits from them, each comprising four bats, four pairs of pads, four pairs of gloves, three helmets, wicketkeeper kit, stumps and scorebooks.

"We immediately contacted two of the schools in our development programme, namely Somerset West Methodist Primary and Umnqophiso Primary in Lwandle who were both in desperate need of cricket kit and told them about the donation and asked them to collect their kit.

"Both schools were absolutely over the moon with their kit and were very thankful for the donations," Craig said. Craig added that their development programme at the centre was going extremely well and they had already identified a number of very talented cricketers at both schools. He said that before they started with the cricket development programme at Lwandle, cricket there was non existent, but the school reported that the boys now practice cricket every day and love the game. He added that apart from some of the cricket kit which was sponsored by Cricket SA, they are still in desperate need of a full time sponsor to help them support the programme.

Anyone who is able to help them should contact either himself or Matthew Knott at the centre on (021) 851 4241.

Craig said that in the meantime more and more schools as well as local clubs had started supporting them and business at the centre was picking up slowly.
