SWCC edge ahead of HHCC in derby
    29/02/08

Despite A top order batting collapse in both their innings Somerset West are still fairly well placed against neighbours Hottentots Holland in the WP 1 C derby being played at Gustrouw, but will have their work cut out if they want to win this match that resumes this Saturday. Hottentots Holland won the toss and sent Somerset West in to bat on a pitch that proved produced an uneven bounce.

Somerset West lost their first wicket, that of opener Jaco Castle with the score on 12 then a partnership of 25 runs between Larry Morkel and Stephen Southey took the score to 37/2 before Morkel was out.

Some pretty poor batting followed during which time the Somerset West batsmen played too many strokes resulting in them rapidly crumbling to 71/6.

Graham Braybrook then joined Stephen Southey and they stayed put together a well constructed 42 runs before Southey was out for 51.

Johan van Niekerk then came to the crease and he and Braybrook took the score to 154/8. Somerset West were eventually all out for 158 runs.

Captain Craig Melvill said he was disappointed with the batting collapse but pleased with the contributions made by Stephen Southey (51), Graham Braybrook (39) and Johan van Niekerk (23).

Somerset West bowled well from the outset taking two wickets early on to have the home team at 17/2 after only three overs.

After this Hottentots Holland lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 97 runs.

This was chiefly due to some excellent spin bowling by Jaco Castle taking five to end the day with 15-6-6-40.

He was backed up by Christo Southey 8-2-2-8, Craig Melvill 7-0-1-17 and Johan van Niekerk 6-2-1-14 as well as some good fielding.

Somerset West then went in to bat again and at the close of play on day one were 32/4 thanks again to some poor shot selections and despite their 158 run lead will have to bat better next week if they want to win this game.

The Second team played Fish Hoek away and again the batsman did not come to the party.

Skipper, Björn van Huyssteen, lost the toss and was asked to bat.

Somerset West scored 152 all out with bad shot selection assisting to this mediocre score.

The best batsmen were Donald Shaw (39), Björn van Huyssteen (33), Chris Carroll (30) and Mario Mons with a gutsy 23 runs.

Fish Hoek was bowled out for 215 runs. Controversy again ruled when Brendan Simpson, bowled a Fish Hoek batsman out off an inside edge, but the Fish Hoek player/umpire called the batsman back, claiming the wind blew the bails off.

This batsman added another 40 odd runs for Fish Hoek score.

The best bowlers were Mario Mons with 13-4-25 and Adrian Williams with 11-2-58.

    Over 40's
The Somerset West's over 40's played the Forty Club from the UK on Sunday in what turned out to be good day of cricket with the likes of Paul Craye, Andy Boyd, Tiny Fourie, Ian Brotherton and Marc "Palm Spin" Gerstner taking the field again for the first time in years.

Skipper, Ian Brotherton won the toss and elected to bowl first and restricted Forty Club UK to 135 all out.

The best bowlers for Somerset West were Gavin Olsen with 2/9 in 5 overs, Ian Brotherton with 2 for 9 in 5 overs and Andy Boyd with 1 for 10 in 5 overs.

Somerset West then scored 137/5, claiming victory by 5 wickets.

The best batsman were Marc Gerstner with 37 not out, hard hitting Sean Grove with 27 runs and Paul Craye, showing not too much rust with a well played 18 runs.

Andy Boyd who opened the batting, retired on 27 not out. Somerset West's u/13 A Team beat Mitchell's Plain by 97 runs in their 30 over match played at radloff park on Saturday.

Somerset West won the toss and batted first scoring 135/6.

Elliot Moses top scored with 48 runs while Robin Edge scored 14 not out.

Mitchell's Plain then went in to bat and were all out for 59 runs.

The pick of the bowlers were Courtney Yon with 3/10, Elliot Moses 3/10 and Petrus Nienaber 2/10.
