    Clinical Pirates beat Batswood
    070308

Pirates put on a clinical display of baseball to soundly beat Batswood 9-2 on Saturday at Radloff Park.

The visitors went 1-0 up early in the game until an excellent bunt by Justin Smith brought in the tying run at the bottom of the fourth innings. From then on Pirates scored steadily (2-2-4) with strategic batting and aggressive base running.

An efficient display by Pirates pitchers Clinton Engelbrecht (winning pitcher with 8 strike-outs) and Darren Burns, backed up by solid defence in the field, limited the visitors to only 2 runs in the game.

Best fielder for Pirates was Charl van Niekerk at left field with the catches of the day coming from Matthew Lambert at 2nd base and Bradley de Waal in center field.

Best batters for Pirates were Justin Smith (3/4 with 1x2 base hit) and B de Waal, C Engelbrecht and R van Niekerk (all 2/2).

The Second team game between Pirates and Lynx, at Radloff Park was a nail-biter.

Pirates found themselves 4-1 down after the first few innings and then showed their true spirit as they clawed their way back to 4-4 to eventually win 5-4 in an entertaining game.

Best fielder for the home team was Dylan Husted who frustrated the Lynx batters by taking 4 crucial catches at left field.

Pirates u/16 outbatted the visitors from Athlone to win their match 13-2 at Radloff Park on Saturday. Pitcher R van Niekerk tied up the Athlone batters striking out 10 batters and giving up only 4 hits.

The u/14A's narrowly lost 5-3 to Phillipi Angels away.

Pirates pitcher Myles van Heerden contained the Angels batters, but Pirates batters were unable to hit the wily Angels pitcher and errors by Pirates allowed Angels to win.

The u/12 and u/10 games were cancelled.

Fixtures on Saturday are: Home: u/16 vs Westridge 08:15. Away: 2nd Team vs Athlone 14:00; Masters vs Landsdown 14:00;u/10 vs Bothasig 08:45;u/12 vs Angels 10:15.
