In their first 15-man friendly of the season Helderberg travelled to Rawsonville to take on the 2007 Boland Champions whom they beat 34-23 in an entertaining match.
Helderberg started poorly conceding two converted tries in the first 15 minutes and then a penalty stretched the lead to 17 for Rawsonvile.
Then just before half-time Helderberg scored when lock, Charl Pretorius, rounded off a fine movement with right wing Shaun Labuschagne and lock De Wet Neethling doing some sterling work. Fullback Ian Coetzee converted to take the half time score to 17-7 in favour of the hosts.
The team talk at the break had the desired effect. Some slick handling by the new loose head prop, Hanno Eksteen, saw him score in the corner (17-12).
Helderberg's backs then took play into Rawsonville's territory where prop Eksteen displayed more ball skills scoring his second try in his debut match. Flyhalf Karlo Aspeling slotted the conversion 19-17.
The home team then regained and stretched the lead with two penalty goals (19-23), but quick possession saw Helderberg?s nippy scrumhalf, Breyton Isaacs, feed flyhalf Aspeling who lobbed an overhead pass to outside centre Stephan du Toit who shrugged off two attempted tackles to score a beauty (24-23).
Next on the scoreboard for the visitors was tight head prop, Eric Coetzee, using his body mass to score and take the score to 29-23. The final try for Helderberg came after a strong run by the sturdy left wing, Ashwin van Heerden, with a try in the corner (34-23).
The forward of the day was prop Hanno Eksteen with more good play coming from captain and lock De Wet Neethling and flank Gary Williams. Back-line player of the match was Wikus van Dyk who with centre partner, Stephan du Toit and wings Shaun Labuschagne and Ashwin van Heerden were solid in defence.
The Second team won 38-5 and the Third team 36-17.
