    070308

The opening ceremony of the WCF Laidlaw World Golf Croquet Championships, which will be held in and around Cape Town from March 8 to 16 takes place at Kelvin Grove, Newlands at 17:00 on Friday, March 7. Several international players arrived in Cape Town recently and were trying out the courts in preparation for the qualifiers, which started on Sunday, March 2 in Fish Hoek.

The championship itself starts on March 8 and matches will be at Kelvin Grove, Rondebosch, Somerset West (Radloff Park) and Helderberg Village Croquet Clubs.

The Croquet Club in Somerset West is undergoing a face-lift for the occasion and two members of the club, Grahame Tomes and Peter Johnson have been selected for the SA Team and will be in action during these championships.

Among the other countries who will be in action are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, USA and Wales.

Spectators are encouraged to come and watch the matches taking place at both Somerset West and Helderberg Village Clubs on March 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14. There is no entry fee and programmes are R20 each.

The final 16 contest will be on Thursday March 13 and the quarter-finals on Friday March 14 in Somerset West when some exciting matches, which will no doubt feature some of the Egyptian players will be played.

The Egyptians are the current World Champs and are spectacular to watch as they hit the ball exceptionally hard and with deadly accuracy.
