    SW vs Helderberg derby evenly poised

    The WP 1C two-day derby between Helderberg and Somerset West, being played at Radloff Park, is very evenly balanced and victory could go either way. Somerset West won the toss and elected to bowl on a hot day and on a track which was very flat resulting in slow scoring.

    After 60 overs Helderberg had scored 118 and after 70 overs had 188 runs.

    The first wicket fell in the 11th over with the score on 17 and the second on 51 and at lunch the visitors were 76/3 after 41 overs.

    After the lunch break, Somerset West's skipper, Craig Melvill took two more wickets to pin Helderberg back to 100/5.

    Then stalwart batsman for Helderberg, Malcolm Stuurman joined Ricardo Thomas at the crease and they took the score to 188/9.

    Other top scorers for Helderberg were Gary Sylvester (40) and Grant Moss (29).

    Craig said he was pleased with his team?s bowling performance and ground fielding but felt they put too many catches down.

    The best of the Somerset West bowlers were: Craig Melvill 17-6-4-50, Jaco Castle 21-5-1-47, Vincent Castle 10-4-1-13 and Shaun Dicks 10-3-2-32. Somerset West went in to bat and lost opener Matthew Knott (2) with the score on 15 and then lost their next wicket on 21/2 when Steven Southey was out for 6.

    Shaun Dicks then joined Jaco Castle and together they took the score to 44 before Dicks was out for 19 with the score on 44/3.

    Larry Morkel came to the crease and he and Jaco put together a partnership of 89 runs to take the score to 133/4. Just before the close of play Jaco was out for 59 off 109 balls and the score was 146/5. When play resumes on Saturday Larry Morkel (46 not out) and Jean Cilliers (6 not out) will continue batting.

    The best bowler for Helderberg was C Katts with 9-1-3-36.

    Helderberg's Second team played Mowbray at home on Saturday and at the close of play on day one Mowbray were ahead of their hosts. Mowbray batted first and scored 198. The best bowlers were G Green 19-3-52-4 and C Lottering 16-2-35-3.

    Helderberg scored 142/10 with H Brighton (28), S Mack (25 top scoring. Mowbray are currently on 21/2 and have a 77 run lead.

    Helderberg's Seconds are playing in the one-day finals at home on Sunday, March 16 and invites players, their families and club supporters to boost their team's spirits. Helderberg's Third team played Fish Hoek and lost by nine wickets.

    Helderberg were all out for 72 after 20 overs. The best batsman was E Zass (27). Fish Hoek passed the score in the 22 over with only one wicket down.

    Somerset West's u/13 team played Peninsula and lost by two wickets in an away game.

    Somerset West got off to a solid start but with the pitch keeping very low the batsmen struggled to score runs.

    The top scores were: Elliot Moses (20) Robbie Uys (11).

    Total: 78 in 40 overs.

    The hosts got off to a good start then the bowlers tore through the middle order, but they were able to hang in and win the game.

    The best bowlers were: Christian Nauder 8- 3- 3- 16, Timothy Azer 8- 3- 1- 8, N Lochner 5- 0- 3- 17. Total: 78/8.

    The u/11's beat Impendulu by 76 runs. Somerset West batted first and scored 131/5 in 25 overs. The top batsmen were: Josh Withers (32), Damian Webster (24) and Ross Campbell (21). The best bowlers were: Shane Williams three wickets in three overs and Liam Azer two wickets in two overs.
