    De Beers Reserves beat Tramways
    210308

THE De Beers first team game against Tramways was abandoned half way into the first half when De Beers striker, Gareth Roelf, challenged the keeper on a 50/50 ball and broke his leg.

The extent of the injury was so severe that he was not moved until the ambulance arrived. The De Beers first team squad will be having a fundraising soon to help cover his medical costs. Anyone interested in helping with donations may phone first team coach Liam McAvoy on 083 666 6980.

The De Beers Reserves however provided some entertaining football in the curtain raiser, also against Tramways.

De Beers started badly and conceded an early goal and the team lacked cohesion, and insisted on playing the ball long on a windy day. In the 30th minute Steven Britz crossed a slide rule pass to Junaid Roopnarain, who made no mistake at close range. De Beers were fortunate to be level at half time.

The second half saw the team being re-shuffled with Darel Smith moving to centre of defence, Wesley Husted to right back and Nolan Hendricks onto the right side of midfield. Even though De Beers had another goal scored against them, the changes worked and they started playing better football.

With De Beers passing the ball around, Tramway started feeling the pressure and within 10 minutes of being 2-1 down De Beers levelled with good play being finished off by Jamin Lopes Da Silva scoring the first of his three goals earning him the Autopage Somerset West man of the match. At 2-2 De Beers stepped up their play and started to totally dominate. The centre midfield pair worked hard with the rest of the team wanting to pass the ball around, this opened up the Tramway defence with some superb through balls for the now in form Jamin to finish off. In defence Parci Vandenhoeke was solid, putting in some solid tackles while keeper Sean Hare-Bowers also put in another fine display.

It was an all round good display from De Beers, but there are still areas where hard work needs to be applied.
