THE past week saw four Helderberg teams host Van der Stel at Charles Morkel Stadium on Wednesday evening and on Saturday host a junior team from Buenos Aires called Los Cedros.
The local under 20?s chalked up a 17-10 victory over the enterprising Argentinians. The visitors proved to have a well drilled pack of forwards, but were outclassed by Helderberg's backline, who showed more penetration, in spite of many substitutions, for the sake of giving everyone a run.
Helderberg's tries were scored by Kobus Joyce (centre), Elmar van Niekerk and Delcaine Kiewitz (wing), with scrumhalf Erick Philander succeeding with one conversion.
Wednesday's results were: Helderberg II 7 Van der Stel I 8, Helderberg III 31 Van der Stel II 7, Helderberg IV17 Van der Stel III 7, Helderberg u/20 0 Vander Stel u/20 15.
This Saturday Helderberg will travel to Kraaifontein for their final friendlies against the host club, who have a brand new first team squad, including several ex-players from Hamiltons and NNK, to boost their chances after a mediocre campaign in last year's Super League B.
This outing should prove ideal preparation for next week.
On Saturday, April 5 the WPRU's League Season commences, with Helderberg RFC taking on UCT at the Charles Morkel Stadium. All teams are likely to be in action.
