H'berg swimmers raise funds for Patch
    28-03-2008

THE PATCH gala took place on Tuesday, February 26 at Somerset House. This is the third consecutive year the gala has been held. Over 120 swimmers from the Helderberg, ranging from 6-14 years of age, took part. It was hosted by the Greydogs Swimming Team, and Vineyard Helderberg participated against them.

"Swim against child abuse" is a very innovative way to involve kids in a health promoting sport, like swimming, and at the same time increasing awareness about PATCH, the child abuse centre in the Helderberg.

The brainchild of this event, Josey Greaver, a board member of PATCH, received positive support from all over the Helderberg. Both clubs and PATCH gratefully acknowledge all those who supported this event by making generous donations to PATCH and by volunteering themselves in the administering of this event.

The two clubs battled it out for the PATCH trophy. The swimmers participated in predominantly 50 m events and relays. Both clubs put forward two very strong teams and the swimmers where not deterred by the rain, nor were the parents. The first three places were awarded PATCH rosettes and it was very warming to see displays of good sportsmanship. Despite the high level of competition of this gala the emphasis was placed on participation and all places, first to sixth, contributed towards overall team points. Ben-Jason Dixon from Vineyard was identified and won a medal for talented junior boy swimmer whilst the girls medal was shared by Sophie and Bella Gebers from Greydogs. Of the 52 events, 23 records were broken. The captains of the Greydogs team, Katherine Morgan and Jake Verster jointly received the trophy which was awarded to the team who secured the most points.

A number of the swimmers who participated in the gala were selected to represent the Western Cape Schools team who competed at SA Schools Champs on March 1. This selection mirrors the high calibre swimmers concerned, namely: Jake Verster, Max Verster, Kristoff Baard, Paul-Johan Hendriksz, Dara Steingaszner, Katya Schulte and Warren Ehlers of the Greydogs team and Ben-Jason Dixon, Raymond Kinnear, Courtney Cole, Tyran Badenhorst and Louisa de Jongh of Vineyard Helderberg.
