    Somerset West end season unbeaten
    04-04-2008

Somerset West drew their final WP 1 C Division match against Wynberg on Saturday, at Radloff Park, ensuring that they remained unbeaten for the season.

Jaco Castle, the stand-in captain for the injured Craig Melvill, said although they would've liked to have won their last game, he was still pleased with the result as they remained unbeaten in the league.

Somerset West won the toss and elected to field first and managed to bowl Wynberg all out for 105 runs.

Christo Southey was the best of the bowlers for the home team, taking four wickets for 14 runs in eight overs.

He was well supported by Jaco Castle, who took three wickets for 42 runs in his 15 overs.

Somerset West batted well and scored 247/7 declared after 63 overs, thanks mainly to Jaco Castle's 101 (his second 100 in a row), Jean Cilliers (37), Vincent Castle (36) and Matthew Knott (34).

Wynberg, facing a deficit of 142, were then sent in to bat again and after they had scored 179/4 the game was declared a draw.

Jaco Castle said he was looking forward to playing in the 1 B League next season and said it was a tough league and would be a big challenge for Somerset West.

He leaves the Western Cape later this month to play for English club Whitley Hall and will be back in Somerset West for the start of the 2008/2009 season.

The second team played their last game against UCT at home this past weekend and lost by nine wickets.

Captain, Bjorn van Huyssteen, won the toss and decided to bowl first. UCT scored a mammoth 299 all out.

The best bowlers were Mike "Sanchez" Harris with 3/24, Bjorn van Huyssteen with 3/61 and Donovan Martin with 2/55. Somerset West fell six runs short of avoiding the follow on (193 all out).

The best batsmen were David Kilian (40), Shane Overberg (39 not out), Petey Baumeister (26), Francois Kilian (23) and Mike "Sanchez" Harris, also with 23 runs.

Shane Overberg and Koos "Deep Heat" Dreyer put on a 54 run partnership for the 10th wicket.

Somerset West followed on and only managed 157 all out, mainly due to bad shot selection. Best batsmen were Petey Baumeister (37), Shane Overberg (22), Francois Kilian, David Kilian and Chris Caroll, each with 18 runs.

UCT needed 54 runs to win the match, which they did losing only one wicket.

The SWCC annual dinner/dance will be held at Kilts Restaurant on April 11, 2008 at 19:00 for 19:30. Phone Bjorn van Huyssteen on 082 828 4592 for more information.

The SWCC Golf Day has been postponed until April 20. For more information, phone David Kilian on 082 690 5660.
