The news that Helderberg will play Victorians at Newlands in a curtain raiser to the Super 14 match between the Stormers and the Hurricanes this Saturday was all the motivation they needed to beat Tygerberg 37-16 last weekend.
This was also Helderberg's first league match of the season and they did not disappoint their faithful fans in chalking up a five pointer on the log.
The two sides appeared well matched, but the opening points were scored from good second phase possession when Helderberg centre, Stephan du Toit, accelerated through a gap to score.
Flyhalf Karlo Aspeling added the extra points. For the rest of the first half Helderberg slowly but surely established superiority, with Aspeling slotting two penalty goals to take the score to 13-0 at the interval.
After the break Tygerberg were awarded a penalty, which made the difference 13-3. Not to be outdone, Helderberg responded with a brilliant solo effort from right wing Shaun Labuschagne, who outstripped the defence for his team's second try. Aspeling converted (20-3).
The home team had success with another penalty goal (20-6) and Aspeling replied with his third accurate penalty goal 23-6.
Overeagerness cost the visitors another penalty and the Tygerberg kicker made no mistake (23-9).
Karlo Aspeling then showed some class after Helderberg surged upfield into Tygerberg territory. He tapped a free kick and dived over between three defenders. His conversion increased the lead to 30-9.
The bonus point try was scored after six handling moves. Shaun Labuschagne tackled and dispossessed a Tygerberg attacker and passed to Charlton Tandy, who passed back to Labuschagne who again fed Tandy, who off-loaded to scrumhalf Breyton Isaacs. Isaacs returned the ball to Tandy who popped it up for fullback Anthony Maarman to score.
Aspeling converted for his contribution of 22 points for the day (37-9).
Tygerberg then scored a converted try moments before the final whistle.
The backline player of the match was right wing Shaun Labuschagne while the forward of the match was the livewire hooker JG Giliomee, who seemed to be everywhere.
Helderberg's second team fared well as they also added five points to their log position with a 29-13 win. Try scorers were: Morné Cooper (2), Henco Fourie, Jacques du Plessis and Frikkie van Heerden. Hannes Louw kicked two conversions.
Other results: Helderberg III 17 - Tygerberg 3, Helderberg IV 20 - Langa 0, Helderberg V 22 - Villager IV 30; Helderberg u/20 A 8 - Tygerberg u/20 16.
The rest of the team's matches are: seconds and u/20 A's kickoff at 19:45 at Craven Stadium on Friday evening with the third team scheduled to start at 18:30. The u/20 B's travel to Paarl and the fourth team to NNK at Parow.
