Disappointing first round for Mac Utd
    270608

THE HEAVY rains during the latter part of last week led to the postponement of all games for Macassar United over the weekend due to waterlogged pitches.

This included the much-anticipated Coke Cup clash against Edgemead-Goodwood, which would have taken place at Manenberg. Dates for the revised fixtures were still to be announced.

The unscheduled break has allowed the management, coaching staff and players to have a look back over the first half of the season, look at where they struggled, adjust their goals and renew their focus for the rest of the season.

Macassar had what can only be deemed as a disappointing first round after a good start to the league. From their eight games they have taken nine points from a possible 24 with one first round fixture still outstanding - with two wins, two defeats and three draws.

They have scored 31 goals, but have conceded more than a goal a game (13) and this is probably the statistic that should concern the coaching staff.

In tight games the team has managed to held its own against formidable opposition but then seem to lose concentration as was evidenced in the match against Leeds Lentegeur when they slumped to a 4-0 defeat after initially giving Leeds a good run for their money.

However, one should also not lose sight of the influence of some poor refereeing decisions on some results (notably against Dalmans Midas and Ashley Rovers which cost the team four vital league points).

For the second round of the season the goal for the team should be to win the tight games and use their opportunities when they have the opposition under pressure.

    Positional switch
The switch in the last few games of midfielder Granville Bosman to the defence have also helped stabilised the team while newcomer Wayne Davids have certainly not weakened the midfield.

Macassar will also be looking at another good run in the Coca Cola Cup. Some key players in Llewellyn Alexander, Shaun Sauls and Danielle Rooi have also returned from injury and suspension, which means competition for places, will be much sterner.

The previous week before the break Macassar started their second round commitments off by again thumping Arsenal with a huge score in a Super League match played at Westridge on Saturday.

However if one takes into consideration that Macassar won the corresponding 1st round fixture with a record breaking 19-0, the result of 15-0 can be seen as somewhat of a disappointed.

Especially when taken into consideration that the score should have been closer to 30-0 against a poor side that have already booked their relegation ticket at the end of the season and who only seem to be going through the motions.

For the record three hat tricks were scored by Allister Pick, Roger Jordaan and Llewellyn Alexander with Wayne Davids (2), Winston Jordaan, Jason Dampies, Granville Bosman and Anthony Adams wrapped up the scoring.

The second team slumped to a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Woodlands with Bradley Matthys getting the solitary goal.

However the following day Matthys was the star for his team as he scored no less than four goals in the second team's 6-0 demolition of Stantree.
