    110708

THE HELDERBERG Cricket Development Centre (HCDC) recently selected an u/13 cricket squad of 13 to play four matches against teams in England in and around London.

The team have already played two matches and fared well in both.

They played their first match on Saturday against a powerful Surrey County Cricket Club u/13 team and despite losing the match by four wickets, gave a good account of themselves.

HCDC batted first and scored 136 all out. The best batsmen were Schoeman Botha (54) and Christiaan de Kock (14).

Surrey scored 137/6. The pick of the touring team's bowlers was Thabang Mtyobile, who tied many batsmen up with his off spinners.

On Sunday HCDC played their second game against Sanderstead Cricket Club and beat them by 33 runs. HCDC batted first and scored 149 all out. Top scorers were Jay Stevens (51) and Isma-eel Gafieldien (37).

Sanderstead were all out for 116.

The best bowlers were Schoeman Botha 4-13 and Revelant Jacobs 3-16. Thabang Mtyobile again bowled well.

Among the highlights on this trip will no doubt be meeting with the Protea squad at Lords before the test against England and attending a Protea's practice session as well as visiting prominent tourists sights in London.

The team is made up of boys from schools all over the Helderberg who have been receiving coaching at the HCDC for a while.

Five of the boys are from Beaumont Primary, two from Somerset-West Methodist Primary and one each from Hendrik Louw, Strand Moslem Primary, Umnqophiso Primary, Somerset House and the Waldorf School with two other boys who were already in England.

Four of the boys have also been selected for the Western Province u/13 squad this season.

They are Schoeman Botha, Isma-eel Gafieldien, Rico Smit and Elliot Moses. The boys are being accompanied by coach Matthew Knott (HCDC) and Wilbur Hindley (SW Methodist Primary).

The boys were capped at a ceremony at the HCDC by Advocate Norman Arendse (president Cricket SA) where a number of sponsors, media and cricket personalities were also present.
