A TRULY robust performance from De Beers ensured a 1-0 victory over academy side Old Mutual, in a physical encounter.
Playing a defensive formation of five midfield players and four in defence, enabled De Beers to control the midfield.
The key to this win was the pace of midfielders Veron Peters and Byron Graham to launch attacks down the respective flanks, which was ultimately also where the first and only goal of the match came from.
The goal came about 10 minutes into the second half, after a telling midfield run down the right wing by Veron Peters, who after seeing the Mutual goal keeper off his line, chipped the ball over his head and into the back of the net.
This was not the only attempt by De Beers, with solo striker Caleb van Oudtshoorn having his fare share of attempts on goal almost opening his account with one shot hitting post.
After losing star goal-keeper Brandon Graham to professional outfit Santos early on in the week, the coaching staff had to quickly find a keeper for this encounter.
It was difficult to find a senior keeper with the skills of Brandon, as he has always been a tower of strength in goals, but it was decided to give Colt's goal keeper, Edward Kruger, the opportunity to represent the club's first team.
17-year-old
He was a bit nervous, which could be expected from the 17-year-old making his début for the first team, after only having started playing goal keeper this season.
However, the gamble paid off handsomely and Eddy showed his talent early on in the match, coming off his line to make a great save after one of the Mutual strikers managed to breach the De Beers defence.
The defensive four comprising of Craig Porter, Arlyn von Willingh, Wayne Arlow (captain) and Wesley Husted, enabled Eddy to settle quickly and play a good game. With the experience and protection of these defenders Eddy kept goal like a seasoned first team player and went on to win a well deserved Altech Autopage Somerset West man of the match award.
An all round fine team effort by the De Beers Reserves ensured a two all draw against the Old Mutual. The draw was clinched in the dying minutes of the game after a superb goal from a header by Junaid Roopnarain which resulted from a corner.
The Altech Autopage Somerset West man of the match award was shared by the team after having come back to draw from being 2-0 down at half time.
Special thanks to loyal De Beers supporters chairman Wally Knott and Raymond Graham for travelling to Mutual Park to once again show their support for the De Beers first and reserve teams.
