The real value of recorded building plans passed by larger municipalities (at constant 2000 prices) during January 2008 increased by 18,6% (R570,6-million) compared with January 2007, Statistics SA reported last week.
Increases were reported for non-residential buildings (67,5% or R397,9-million) and additions and alterations (34,6% or R287,3-million). A decrease was reported for residential buildings (-7% or -R114,7-million) for the same period. The value of recorded building plans passed by larger municipalities (at current prices) during January 2008 rose by 28,4% compared with January 2007. All the main categories of buildings contributed positively to the 28,4% year-on-year increase recorded for January 2008, namely non-residential buildings (81,2% or R800,6-million), additions and alterations (45,7% or R633,5-million) and residential buildings (0,6% or R17,2-million).
Six provinces reported increases in the value of building plans passed. The largest contributor to the increase of 28,4% was KZN (contributing 11,6 percentage points or R593,4-million), followed by Gauteng (6,9 percentage points or R353,9-million) and Eastern Cape (6,6 percentage points or R335,5-million).
