'Stompers' celebrate Croydon Estate's first harvest
    11/04/08

Residents of a gated village, which is situated near Faure and has its own vineyards and cellar, were in a festive mood last week. They celebrated completion of the first harvest at Croydon Vineyard Estate.

Over 200 of the development's property owners gathered in a ceremonial stomping of grapes in the tradition of early winemakers.

Croydon Vineyard Estate was launched in 2004, endorsed by renowned winemaker Beyers Truter, who is its cellarmaster.

Houses are situated among the vineyards, made up of cultivars such as pinotage, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot.

Although the harvest may be the first, the cellar on the estate is not new to making wine. The John Platter wine guide's 2008 edition awarded four stars to a pair of wines made in the cellar by winemaker Corius Visser.

Property owners can follow the winemaking process on the estate's internet "blog".

Although stands have been sold out, some are available for re-sale from the estate sales office.
