PC VAN DEN BERG of Orange Street, Somerset West writes:
It is with a sense of desperation that I write to you about the total lack of traffic control in our town. On several occasions I have contacted the Traffic Department, all to no avail. Just nothing gets done about the situation.
The intersection of Lourens and Andries Pretorius Streets outside the Post Office needs serious monitoring. Drivers, especially taxis, are ignoring red traffic lights brazenly and regularly.
It is time an officer was put on duty to enforce obedience to law and safeguard lives, as well as watching Sir Lowry's Pass Road and Irene Avenue.
As residents of Bridgewater Estate, we have long campaigned to keep the taxis from tearing through our neighbourhood, using it as a short-cut to Strand Main Road and avoiding traffic lights.
There is a sign prohibiting taxis from using our road, placed at the entrance to Orange Street. A few months ago a taxi driver was stopped by a law enforcer. That night the sign was ripped up and discarded in a drain.
The sign is back in position and being regularly ignored by taxi drivers.
