    'Stop the fireworks'
    110108

Ian van Jaarsveld, Heldervue resident, writes: After many years of enduring the consistent, uncaring attitude of the international hotel within our midst, it is now time to put a stop to this misery once and for all.

The annual fireworks display for the discerning clientele has wreaked havoc on the poor animal population of our suburb for so many years and continues with an arrogant attitude that refuses to engage the stance of the local community.

This barbaric act of indulgence is long outdated, and the fact that they simply ignore the plight of the animals that howl with pure fear, quiver and run off seeking places to hide in order to escape the horrendous racket that en-gulfs the suburb each year, is simply unacceptable.

I will no longer be held hostage on New Year's Eve, having to remain at home in order to medicate and later placate our animals to ensure that they do not die of sheer fear and anxiety, for the so-called pleasure of a few.

I am therefore calling on all the residents of Heldervue and surrounds, to voice their total dissatisfaction with this ritual and demand that a formal statement is issued by the local management confirming that this practice will cease forthwith. Should this request fall on deaf ears, then the group of concerned people that have discussed this activity, are prepared to mobilise the local community in order to arrange suitable protest action and activities that will result in significant inconvenience to the hotel management and their business until such time that they accede to the demand.

The two relative authorities that are required to issue the permit for such activity will be approached and lobbied separately. On January 3, News24.com reported that the NSPCA has called for the complete banning of fireworks after their offices were once again swamped with calls for pets in distress. No more.
