    They enjoy the fireworks
    250108

Chez from Somerset West writes: In response to the letters complaining about the Lord Charles Hotel's annual fireworks, I just need to add my two cents' worth.

We moved to the Helderberg from Port Elizabeth over ten years ago, and it has become a ritual for us to host a house party on New Year's Eve and watch the fireworks. My parents' house (in De Wingerd) and now my house (in Helena Heights) have perfect views of the fireworks, and we enjoy watching them each year.

This year was particularly spectacular, when we stood on our balcony and, I feel, had the best view in the whole area.

I know that fireworks are bad for animals, and I do feel sympathy for them as I have two dogs of my own - but I also know that this happens once a year, for a short space of time.

You don't hear the people in Strand complaining about the Guy Fawkes fireworks that go on for hours and hours - I was on Beach Road last year, and the bangs were so loud when they echoed off the blocks of flats that we all commented that we felt like we were in a war zone.

My feeling is that the Lord Charles has a permit, they have been doing it for many years, many people look forward to the display every year, and a lot of money, time and effort goes into it.

They are proud of it, and they do it out of their own pocket. For one night of the year, why can they not just be left in peace to continue bringing fun and joy to the people around them?
