    'R44 a frustration'
    29/02/08

Brian Barnes from Somerset West writes: Like Karen Geldenhuys (last week's DistrictMail), I also commute daily between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, and have also become extremely frustrated with the long tailbacks on the way there. Synchronising some of the lights would probably help, but I believe the greater problem is that the green phases for the R44, especially at the Annandale Road and Jamestown lights where the greatest problems seem to be, is too short for the huge volume of R44 traffic.

This relatively short green phase does not let enough vehicles through at a time. It is not uncommon for there to be 50 to 100 vehicles on the R44 backed up at these intersections by the red. If the R44 green phase at these two intersections was say 80 seconds at least, I believe you would see a considerable improvement, while the side road traffic would still not suffer the delays of the R44 motorists.

I have established that management of the traffic lights at Annandale, Jamestown and Technopark all falls under the Boland District Council in Stellenbosch, under Mullan Sauls. He informs me that they have contracted traffic engineers to do a study of traffic flow between Jamestown and Stellenbosch, and have already increased the R44 green phase to about 60 seconds. It would be better if motorists voice their frustrations directly to him on 086 126 5263. The more the better.
