    'Skipper to be applauded'
    070308

MIKE from Gordon's Bay writes: I am writing in reply to the article on the yacht in distress (DistrictMail, February 15).

I wish to correct a few things in the above article as the skipper involve's reputation stands to be questioned. We had purchased the vessel in Port Elizabeth and World Wide Yacht Deliveries were asked to bring it down to Gordon's Bay for us.

The skipper comes highly recommended and there was not even a second thought.

They had held back until the ideal weather window presented itself before leaving, unfortunately on reaching home the wind had strengthened to ?90 knots.

As this is a large vessel, she has a lot of windage, this made the approach to both harbours almost impossible. The NSRI offered to try and assist by guiding it in on tow through the harbour mouth. The skipper was not happy with this, but was willing to try.

After a few attempts in attaching a tow line failed, he turned down the offer and returned to the safety of the sea, yet another night out in those dreadful conditions.

I commend the skipper on his decision and would recommend him to anyone wanting to have a boat delivered. Halcyon Isle is a 48 foot boat and is a handful at the best of times, but it has proven to be a seaworthy boat in those terrible conditions and was well handled by him.
