    'Daymom took away innocence'
    070308

Valeska Van Zyl writes via e-mail: I am best friends with one of the mothers who's little angel was in the care of Monica Helm (the Somerset West woman accused of drugging children she was responsible for).

I'm a mother myself, whose youngest is just a little older than my friend's son.

The anguish and pain that this woman put my friend through, not to mention the pain and suffering she has caused that little boy, is unthinkable.

There are many nights she has spent crying; nights she has been up consoling him when he screams "mommy it hurts". And there is nothing she can do for him, because to date no results have been given to her so that doctors can treat him.

How does one accused of such a crime look at one's own children and grandchildren and not see what the result of the horrible abuse?

You have taken away months, years, smiles, carefree years of being a child.

How do you sleep at night?

Mrs Helm has been released on R1 000 bail. Is that what a child's life is worth?

Did you, Monica, ever stop and think about what you were doing, did you ever think what you would have done to someone like yourself if that was your child?

My heart goes out to all the mothers of the children in Kinderland and to their children, but most of all to my friend for the tears she has shed, the anguish you have caused her and her family. I do not wish this on my worst enemy.

The torment of not knowing what is in store for her child in the years to come, for damage you have caused, for stripping away normal development and putting them back years.

I see the changes in him now and I ache with my whole being thinking that it could have been my child.

I hope that justice will prevail and that you will pay the price for taking away their innocence.
