I am a resident in the Strand and enjoy the privilege of having drinkable water right from our taps and also access to one of the best beaches in the Western Cape. I have however noticed a few things that are starting to concern me. I drive to and from work along Beach Road everyday and where in the past you would occasionally get a sewerage smell driving over the Lourensford River, it is a smell I now notice every morning.
When one would get a slight graze over the skin doing some work at home, one of the best healing methods would be to go for a swim in the ocean. The graze would heal rather fast and not even leave a scar. These days you find that if you have a graze of some sort and take a dip in the ocean, it takes much longer to heal and the chances are that it will leave a scar. I am a young person, so this has nothing to do with age. We have had several people visiting from outside the Helderberg and when they drink water here, they seem to develop some tummy bug causing vomiting and diarrhoea. All you would hear from the doctor is that there is some "bug" going around but no one can ever give a clear answer as to what actually causes the so-called "bug". All the big dams that supply us with water are linked by a massive pipe network. So to transfer bacteria like e-coli from one place to another would not be difficult.
My questions are:
How clean and safe is our tap water to drink?
How clean is the seawater at the Strand beach?
How much sewerage is being pumped into the ocean without being properly treated?
How adequate are the water waste treatment plants for our region seeing that we have had only a "slight increase" of people living in the Helderberg basin?
It would be great if someone could put mine and countless other people's minds at rest with regards to above issue. Your positive response would be appreciated.
