    'Time to re-check public phones'
    28/03/08

Incommunicado, Strand writes via e-mail: We had the displeasure of hopping backwards in time recently whereby we had to find a Telkom "tiekie" box to make a phone call.

First port of call was the one stationed at the Friendly Store in Church Street, Strand. Our only R5 coin was popped into the slot, which promptly just slid right through its belly into its little metal mouth below.

Tried it three times in disbelief, then went into the store and yes, they confirmed having reported the faulty phone to Telkom some months ago.

Into the car we go and drive down to the Dorpsmeent in Strand. Same scenario, coin went through faster than high fibre bran.

Nobody here to complain to and I can feel the artery in my neck starting to pound. We note a string of telephones across the road at the post office. Dodging traffic, as we are not used to walking, we walk up to a box noted "coin" as we obviously don't have the "card" and attempt to drop our now warm R5 coin into the slot.

First thought was that we were pushing the coin into the wrong slot, but squinted at the box. Yes, there it is written "R5" and can you believe it - the slot is not wide enough to accommodate the R5 coin, which has been in circulation for many years.

Every single box could not take the R5 coin!

By this time we were ready to clout someone with the receiver, fortunately there were no post office or Telkom personnel around whom we could mug at this time of the night or we would be sending this article from the Strand Police station.

Please, whoever is responsible at Telly-Tubby-Telkom-Land - would you kindly pop some Omega 3's to stimulate your brain cortex and fix your pretty little phones, scattered all over our pretty little town?

    Thank you ever so much!
