    'Pubs must stay'
    110408

"Grateful Parent" from Somerset West writes: In response to Sleepless's suggestion to move the clubs, I say a resounding "Let them stay".

Let us never forget we are a community of all ages. The noise was coming from a local pub that gives local bands an opportunity to strut their stuff. These are dedicated musicians who need this kind of exposure. Its wonderful because at last our youth can get together locally where everyone knows each other, including the owners of the pubs and the bouncers.

The added advantage is they are not driving miles away to find entertainment. For years our youth complained there was nothing for them in Somerset West. Now they have a few venues where they can get together. The added advantage of them being in the centre of town is the police are present and everything is being monitored.

I lived two blocks away from Main Road and did not find the noise serious. Besides, it doesn't happen often enough to run our young people out of town. I liked the idea that I could pop my head out and hear what was going on knowing exactly where my daughter was.

Personally I know a lot of the people who were there on March 28. These are lovely young men and women who are loyal to each other and many of them hold down responsible day jobs or are serious students. They are supportive, dedicated, respectful, really good people. What is the harm if they get together and have some fun?

I understand that sleep may be a problem, but one is only losing a few hours. Can we not afford in our more senior years to be a bit more understanding and generous?

Instead of lying there seething at the loss of sleep and hating the noise, why not close your eyes and enjoy the music of youth - it is a wonderful sound. It really does all boil down to seeing life from a different perspective for it is a sad day when we forget what is was like to be young.
