MARGARET WITHERS, Vice Chairman of the Animal Welfare Society Hottentots Holland, writes:
With reference to your article of July 11 entitled: "AWS palace revolution foiled", we must point out that the AWS committee does regularly incorporate new blood onto the committee.
At the recent AGM, there were eight valid nominations for the committee.
Some 16 nominations had been submitted, of which the nominations for suspended members were declared invalid. Of the eight valid nominations, six were for standing members, and two for new members.
All were elected.
In fact, of the six previous members re-elected, only four had been members of some years' standing.
The other two had been members for two and three years respectively. It is clear, therefore, that the committee is based on a rotationary system.
We feel that it is advisable - indeed, necessary - to keep on some of the longer-time members because of their experience and knowledge.
To have a whole committee of new, inexperienced members would obviously be very unwise.
