    'False advertising'
    250708

"CONCERNED CONSUMER" writes: I write with some concern for pensioners and families on a strict grocery budget, about a certain supermarket group.

The Somerset West branch practices what I can only call false advertising. On numerous occasions I have run into this store to purchase a few items, and each time when I have arrived at the till at least one of the items has scanned at a higher price than what was marked on the shelf, and the price difference has each time been at least R3, not some minuscule amount!

This happened to me a few months ago, and I complained to the manager, and wrote an e-mail to the head office (after the third time it happened).

    'Would be attended to'
I was contacted by e-mail and phone, and apologies were made and promises given that this problem would be attended to. I have not returned to this store since the last time this happened (about three months ago), but last week I could not find a certain item at my usual supermarket, so I ran into this branch and happened to, at the same time, pick up a pack of five disposable razors and headed to the till with my two items. The razors, which were marked R8,59 on the shelf, rang through the till at R12,99, a difference of more than 50%. I immediately queried and the cashier (with the usual 'could not care less' attitude of most of the staff at this store) adjusted the price. I went to the manager?s office to report it, showed him the correction on my till slip, pointed out the barcoded price tag with the lower price on it and once again received profuse apologies. I then wrote another e-mail to the head office, and received one back saying that they would attend to the problem.

I feel that the public should be warned.
