MOTORIST from Somerset West writes:
Entering a Spar parking area last Sunday morning, a car in front and to the right of me did a "Kaapse Draai".
Some of us in the Cape are prone to that - you first turn far to the right to enable yourself to line up with a parking spot, and then make a quick left turn (naturally, without any indication). This resulted in me having to brake quite hard and touch my horn in warning.
He also stopped hard, missing me by centimetres. And oh yes, we were not trying for the same parking spot.
My caution to him to indicate when he turns resulted in a torrent of four-letter words of abuse. I drove past and parked.
I was hardly out my vehicle when the guy was right there with me.
He seemed sober enough but did have a party smell on his breath.
Two compatriots quickly joined him, making me feel unsafe. I had this big dog in the back of my bakkie, so I made as if to open the door, but the compatriots held the door shut. They all got the message though, and walked away.
As I was shopping, I was bumped quite deftly in the back and that someone continued past me.
Guess who.
I saw him again at the end of the row of shelves, where I joined him and suggested that we cool off and offered him my hand.
Next thing he slapped me.
That's when I slapped him too. Nice and hard.
Why he did so, I can't tell.
He probably felt himself safe because of our age difference.
I'm not proud to say this, but it did feel quite gratifying when he just stood there and gaped.
Mumbling more threats, he then steamed out of the shop.
All of this was noticed by two couples, one man of which congratulated me and gave me his card. Two shop assistants saw it too and went to fetch the manager, who came to ask if all was okay.
Any lessons to be learned from this?
Yes - even if you're in the right, don't get into an argument with a traffic violator. It's just not worth it.
This guy had plenty of surplus aggression, and if he had a gun, anything could have happened!
