    Chess hits our shores
    04/07/08

PIETER TOERIEN is presenting CHESS - The Musical, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA, now on stage at Theatre on the Bay until July 20.

From the team that brought you the hit shows Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair comes a gripping romance, full of intrigue, rivalry and jea?lousy.

Chess is used as a metaphor for romantic rivalries and the US-Soviet conflict during the Cold War.

The main characters form a love triangle: the arrogant American Grandmaster, Freddie Trumper, Anatoly Serievsky, the determined but gentle Russian champion who plans on defecting to the West, and Florence Vassy, the Hungarian-American chess second, who arrives at the international championships with Freddie, but falls in love with Anatoly.

From Bangkok to Budapest, the players, lovers, politicians and spies all struggle to gain the upper hand. Book at Computicket or at the theatre on (021) 438-3301.
