THE FIRST Amandla Boxing Promotions tournament lived up to its "battle of the future" tag when 900 spectators turned out to witness explosive boxing at Lwandle community hall in Strand on Sunday. Seven pro-bouts in total provided fans with toe-to-toe and nail-biting action as each boxer tried to outsmart their opponents. In the first bout Strand's Xolani "Ta Xi" Mjikelo suffered two knockdowns in round one against Buntu Makrwana in a junior fly division contest fought at high pace. Mjikelo's gallant comeback could not sway the judges, but he certainly won the adoration from his vocal band of supporters. He had Makrwana in all sorts of troubles, but could put him on the canvass. Sandile "Killer" Ngwen?ze's knockout in the fifth round by Port Elizabeth's Makhosi Zwengu put a damper in what was otherwise a jovial mood. Many Nomzamo-Lwandle residents couldn't believe Ngwenze kissed the canvass and the referee waved him out. Xolani "Kid Cool" Dyantyi taught Thembinkosi Dike from Langa a boxing lesson in their junior featherweight fight. Dike should consider hanging up his gloves because the way Dyantyi punished him proved he has nothing to offer in the ring. Another bright star from Strand could be Kelvin Louw, who faced and knocked out Xolisa Nkqintamo in the third round. The fights were sponsored by Lombardi Foods and promoter Charles Bashin Mjikelo was excited with the turnout and performance of the ringmen. "The boxers gave us our money's worth and I am sure we will bring more tournaments to the Strand in the future," said Mjikelo. Fight supervisor Mickey Klaas also gave the tournament the thumbs up. "It was well attended and the boxers showed desire to be in the ring. We congratulate Mr Mjikelo for staging such a wonderful fight without any hiccups," said Klaas.
