Police women starts knitting for elderly

At the start of April, Ms Christina Smit of the Khutsong police station, started with an initiative among the women at the police station. “During their lunch breaks, everybody was just sitting around chatting. Why not use these 30 minutes more constructively?” she asked. “With the high rate of poverty among the people from Khutsong, especially among the elderly, a small group of women started knitting scarves. The initiative spread like a wild fire, and soon everybody was involved,” says insp. Heine von Benecke, Khutsong police spokesperson. During a function held on Wednesday 30 April, the group of women who by now had even involved officials from the provincial office, laid their hard work on the table. An astonishing seventy scarves of all sizes and warm colours were knitted in just three weeks. The scarves were handed over to people at the Khutsong Old Age Home. A gesture which definitely not only warmed the body but also the hearts of each person who received one. The station commissioner, dir. Lucas Ngobeni, expressed his sincere appreciation to each of the women involved. “Khutsong’s Women Network surely made an impact where it is needed most,” he said. A special word of thanks was extended to all the women of the Khutsong police station, as well as capt. Lindsay Smits, insps Hester Krugel and René de Jager of the North West provincial police office, who also put their weight behind the project.
