New AMMSA president elected

This is what Mr Terence Goodlace, executive vice president and head of South African operations said about Mr Phillip Tobias, senior manager of operations at Driefontein Gold mine, who was recently appointed 113th president of the Association of Mine managers of South Africa. Tobias started his mining career in December 1993. Goodlace said that Gold Fields recognised Tobias’ talent early and he was elected as leader on the all-import Gold Fields Vulindlela change initiative. “In 1996 Phillip obtained his mine managers’ certificate of competency and joined our association as an associate member,” said Goodlace. After five years, Tobias was selected as one of six young stars in Gold Fields to participate in a leadership development programme which included exposure at the Gold Fields operations in Australia and Ghana. In May 2003 Tobias was promoted to production manager at the Kloof Libanon section and 16 months later, was transferred to Kloof 4 Shaft, where he had the task of driving the production build-up in a tough environment. His success at 4 Shaft earned him a promotion to senior mining consultant at Corporate Office in 2006. Tobias has been a council member of the association since 2005. He is married to Stella and they have two daughters, Phillipa and Nicolette. Tobias aims to focus on many aspects in his challenge as president. One of the things he will concentrate on, is the incorporation of women in the mining workforce. He trusts that he will make the association proud and execute his task to the best of his ability.
