SEDIBENG. - The regional PAC leadership launched a scathing attack on former PAC-general Thami Ka Plaatjie for causing a divide within the organisation.
The party's regional leadership, led by chairperson Vakele Mkandawire, called an urgent media briefing on Friday to put the record straight regarding whom they support between the party's president Letlapa Mphahlele and Plaatjie. He was quite clear that regional PAC delegates are throwing their weight behind Mphahlele. Now there is a bitter rivalry between those who are pro-Mphahlele and those who pro-Plaatjie.
Apparently the problem started at the PAC National Conference that was held in Bloemfontein earlier this month, where there was an ugly war of words over the current leadership of the party. The party constitution was suspended, while Mphahlele was accused of ruling the party with an "iron fist".
This troubling situation is threatening the party ahead of next year's elections.
"We do not approve of such a division, or the factional and tribal activities in the movement. We find it unacceptable that a person such as Thami Ka Plaatjie will get himself into such activities. We as the Sedibeng Regional PAC leaders are not surprised, as he [Plaatjie] has been running factional or tribal campaigns in the party," says chairperson Mkandawire.
He adds that they do not regard Plaatjie and those who support him as PAC members. He says that any member who does not renew his or her membership is not regarded as a PAC member.
At the time of going to press, Plaatjie was not available for comment
