Lightning kills child at school

SASOLBURG.- A grade 7 learner of Theha-Setghaba Primary in Zamdela died after she was struck by lighting on the school's playground on Friday.

According to a school spokesperson, the children were playing outside during break when the incident occurred. 'One of the ladies working in the tuck shop came and called us,' he said.

Lebohang Mokwena, known as Matsie, was the only one hit by the lighting whilst standing with her other friends. She died instantly. 'We applied first-aid, but it was too late,' he said.

'It is a very difficult day for us, especially the children. We must urgently get pscychologists or somebody who can talk to the children. This incident had a huge impact on the children,' he said. One learner fainted during the assembly period on Monday.

'It is difficult for the staff as well. It is the first time that one of the learners died,' the spokesperson said.

According to a teacher, Matsie was a pleasant learner who did well academically. She also sang in the school choir.

Matsie leaves a younger brother and her parents behind.
