Soccer 'skills' exposed
By Zacharia Nale

Recently a group of media personalities (including myself) had their soccer skills badly exposed. We were told in no uncertain terms that we should leave football to footballers and stick to what we know best, which is putting pen on paper and talking behind microphones.

On Freedom Day, the Media Soccer Team, which consisted of members of Vaal Weekly and VUT FM, (including Thabiso "Makgorometsa" Radebe, Motseki "Dancing Shoes" Mabuya, Rerato "Zola" Mtholo, Phakisi "Parks" Mokoena and yours truly) took part in the Parks Promotion Soccer Tournament that was played at the New Vaal Sports Grounds in Lethabo.

It was here that Sports Beat learnt the hard way that writing/talking and playing football are worlds apart. I mean - we were beaten 6-3 nogal!

Mind you, these are the very same people who always write and talk too much about football on the radio or in the newspaper week-in and week-out.

Hats off to Mtholo, however, seeing as he was better than the rest. This boy can still play competitive soccer if he tried. Motseki Mabuya also showed some good footwork, but faded as the game progressed.

However, "Parks" Mokoena and Thabiso Radebe seem to only have been chosen to add to the numbers on the field. My advice to Radebe is to shed some kilos, because the man sure can't run.

As for yours truly - all I can say is "khula mzimba sala ntliziyo". But be warned - there is no replacement for experience!

Despite the defeat, the media team gave our opponents a very hard time. But we had a fat chance to win the match due to a biased referee who was appointed by our opponents. Sports Beat might sound like a crybaby, but we lost the game long before kick-off. Anyway, there is no use crying over spilt milk because what's done is done.

Furthermore, Sports Beat was informed that our next opponents are Theta FM. Watch this space...this game will be a humdinger.

Meanwhile Bafana Bafana has a new coach, Joel "Mr Jackpot" Santana. Welcome to Mzasi, Sir. The knives were out for the unfamiliar Santana even before he started his job.

The man was appointed with the recommendation of Carlos Alberto Parreira, who ditched Bafana Bafana 25 months before the World Cup. Strange things are happening in our football. The situation is similar to a wife divorcing her husband, only to recommend one of her friends as a replacement for marriage. Bizarre!

Perhaps this makes sense to Safa, but not to Sports Beat. Regardless of the absurdity, we should give Santana the support he needs, because our complaints won't change anything now.

Oeshee kuze Kuse!
