AT first glance one could easily have mistaken the truck neatly positioned in the security wall of a house in Kommissaris Street in Welgemoed as part of a film set. But the various reinforcement measures done to prevent the concrete roof at the entrance of the house from caving in, was an indication of a freak accident involving a 8 ton delivery vehicle reportedy having faulty brakes.
Owner Trevor Govender, who was not at home when the accident occurred, said family and friends visiting from Bloemfontein were home when the incident occurred after noon. “I had to come home to sort out the mess,” a composed Govender told Tygerburger last week Wednesday. He was greatful that no one was injured in the process.
Apparently the brakes of the delivery vehicle dropping merchandise at the near?by Pick n Pay Family Store failed and the vehicle rolled backwards into Kommissaris Street. In an effort to avoid an oncoming car, the truck driver swerved to the side and landed in the entrance to the Govender household. The front door made of glass was also damaged.
At the time of the crash at 12:30 Ms Dawn Davis, a friend of the Govenders, was watching TV in the house, some three metres from where the crash took place. Earlier she had been doing the washing and walking in the alley of which the roof had to be reinforced.
“It was a big noise. I realised something big had happened, but was astounded when confronted with dust and broken glass, the back end of a truck and a shocked truck driver,” she said. Davis and husband Bernie waited outside while construction workers secured the site.
